Motions

In Model UN, you can suggest what you would like to happen next by “making a motion.” Below is how to do this virtually:

  • Click “Participants”

  • Click “Raise Hand”

  • Wait to be called on

  • Once called on, you can make a motion for either a moderated caucus (one person speaks at a time about a specific topic) or an unmoderated caucus (go into breakout rooms and have an open discussion on a specific topic).

  • The chair will say “Any seconds for this motion?” meaning — does anyone support this?

  • To second a motion, take yourself off mute and say “second.” (There only needs to be one delegate who seconds a motion.”

  • The chair will have their screen shared so you see what the motions are. Once there are at least 3 motions to choose from, you will vote on which one you’d like to happen. You will vote for the motion that is most disruptive first.

  • The chair will identify which motion is being voted on.

  • Click “Participants” then click “yes” or “no” to vote in favor (yes) or opposed (no).

What to say to make a motion:

  • Moderated Caucus: “Motion for a moderated caucus on the topic of _____ for _____ minutes with a ____ second speaking time.”

  • Unmoderated Caucus: Motion for an unmoderated caucus on the topics of _____, _____, and ____ for ____ minutes.”

Note: for an unmoderated caucus in virtual Model UN, you will suggest 3 topics for discussion in the breakout rooms. If the motion passes, chairs will instruct you to then rename yourself to indicate which breakout room you’d like to be placed in.
